LEARN ABOUT: Swamp Wallaby Joey, Australia
(Wallabia Bicolor)
Swamp Wallabies are macropod marsupials. They are
mammals with large feet that carry and suckle their babies in a pouch on mom's
belly for up to eight months. Their gestation period is only 33-38 days and
grow to nearly three feet tall. They live for about 15 years.
Contrary to what its name implies
"Swampees" are found in all types of habitats in Eastern Australia, including
eucalyptus forest and woodlands.
Swamp wallabies eat a large variety of native and
exotic vegetation, leaves, ferns, grasses and shrubs. They also eat pine tree
seedlings which make them an enemy and target of man. They sleep during the
day and hide from dingoes, foxes, and eagles.
They are also known as "Stinkers".
According to Aboriginal peoples, the swamp wallaby is considered inedible due
to its smell and taste after cooking.
They are typically loners but are
also known to be quite the party animal.
